As part of a £76 million redevelopment programme, the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) wanted to consolidate and update its existing training facilities in Hendon and provide a more efficient, high-quality estate with sustainability at its core.
Appointed by main contractor Mace, Lindner Prater was responsible for designing and developing the external envelope for two new buildings – Building A and B.
Building A – the larger of the two buildings – provides teaching, office and specialist training spaces, a multi-purpose hall, fitness gym and a dining space. Contained within Building B is the MPS Rifle Range and associated spaces.
The building structures benefit from a reinforced concrete frame with a façade comprising horizontal layers of ribbon window design clad in a standing seam Anthra zinc.
The southern elevation of Building A also features a glazed curtain walling system with solar shading cut into the building footprint – supporting the sustainable intent of the project.
Utilising a full BIM design strategy was essential for such an extensive project. With both buildings requiring roofing systems to be waterproofed and insulated with varying finishes including concrete paving slab walkways, round washed ballast, plugged wildflower green roofing and exposed single ply membrane, the combination of our experience in delivering practical solutions along with a robust BIM strategy was key to ensuring the project’s successful completion.
